Nicotine is a full agonist of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (and thus the name of the channel), that is, it causes the opening of the channel to ion flux just as does acetylcholine (ACh). While the dosage amounts (the dose response curve) may be different from ACh, nicotine induces all of the features of channel physiology as does the natural neurotransmitter, including activation and subsequent desensitization.
