Why is the expression "religious liberal" almost an oxymoron?

So many of the great intellectuals; Emerson, Mark Twain,G Bernard Shaw, Noam Chomsky, Bertrand Russell, to name a few, have been skeptics and agnostics. I hear of the "religious left", but what percentage of religious people are truly liberal? For all you conservatives out there, these great liberals weren't subversives
